Italy proposes assistance for the demobilization of 1,300 Alitalia workers


Italy has offered help in a program to lay off 1,300 Alitalia workers over a four-year period, a labor union official said, as the losing firm struggled for labor group approval for a restructuring plan and avoid having to take planes out of service.

"The Ministry of Labor has proposed to support workers who agree to leave the company," Giancarlo Serafini, secretary of UALT, said after a round of negotiations with the government and the company on Friday.

Alitalia's restructuring plan includes a reduction in the number of jobs in land services by 2,037 jobs and a one-third reduction in individual wages in a final bid to turn the company into
